It’s Been a Long Time

Since I posted anything on anywhere. With my work contract winding up it’s been difficult to think of gaming in any other way than just playing. I’m looking to change that in the near future and get back to posting more frequently, and also on backslashgaming.com.

In the meantime, here’s a quick run down of what’s been going on:

Borderlands Let’s Play. After one episode I’m going to be abandoning this particular debacle. Sulley is great in the comms and we tried to get Duck in with us last night, but the rubbish lobby system prevented us from being in the same game together. The game that Sulley and I were working on was then tainted by a moral dilemna (and I don’t care what the spell checker says that is the correct spelling of dilemna!). I’ll put a video up explaining all, but the issue meant that we couldn’t in good faith continue with our characters and neither of us wants to start again. We even tried to have another friend, Shiznit, host a game, but we couldn’t even see him in the lobby menus.

If you missed it, here’s episode 1 of the series [NSFW]:

Still been playing BFBC2, unlocked Magnum Ammo on the Xbox version and made a video about it which was accepted and posted to the Pixel Enemy Revive channel (thanks guys)

I’ve been following the same method for playing on the PC, but I don’t find it as enjoyable on PC. I’m getting old and lazy so prefer the controller to keyboard and mouse. I’ve not recorded any PC gameplay as even with a new graphics card, my computer still struggles a bit with it.

After recently being gifted Team Fortress 2 by the Awesome D, it’s now free to play. Typical. I returned the favour with Monday Night Combat which we have yet to play, and a game that I’ve only played for about thirty minutes. I mix up some TF2 gameplay with info on a MNC giveaway in this vid:

Another game that is now free to play is Arma 2. I downloaded it last night. Not had a chance to play it yet, but it looks pretty good. You can get it from here: http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=14588

Oh, I’ve also been on YouTube for just over a year. Well just over a year uploading vids and the like. Here is my anniversary video:

When I started my channel I did not go in to it lightly. Having lurked for a number of years I was aware of the level of random hate and trolling that is an everyday occurrence on YouTube. I was lucky in a way that from the start I was part of the Battlefield community and gained support from a great bunch of subscribers and fellow uploaders. I was all too aware that just because you upload to YouTube, or play a certain game does not mean that everyone who does the same has to either like you, or support you. But then, that’s the same in everything you do in life. So I’ve always treated YouTube as something that I do to amuse me and those close to me. Subscriber count is just a number and ratings don’t matter.

Erm, that’s pretty much it for the now. I’ve probably missed out loads, so there may be some updates in the very soon.

Day 2 on the Xbox, K/D: 0.71

After taking part in the Don’t Revive Me Bro podcast with bigmooney and bebarnee last night I went on to Xbox in an attempt to level up some more in order to get the Magnum Ammo at level 15.

I joined #MongolianGnome’s party and we entered Harvest Day for some conquest. Before we started I asked John what level he was since that would skill match us against players of his level in the game – as a level 30-something I was expecting more of a challenge than when I enter the game alone to be joined by blueberries with a skill level of similarly intelligent molluscs.

As it happens we did have more of a challenge, especially when we spawned 100 tickets down with all flags already capped. We started 3 v 2 but then it became 3 v 5 when every person entering the game joined the other side. Although we made a valiant effort we couldn’t claw back the tickets and saw the long slow bleed as we ran from flag to flag to be confronted by the other players and one incredibly obnoxious teabagger.

Sure, I have a reputation for teabaggery, but I do not do it after every single kill, in fact I seldom do it to non-friends unless they’ve been particularly troublesome or annoying to begin with. This guy was something else.

The second round was different and we totally demolished the other team to point of them quitting when they were down to about 30 tickets. Typical! They can give it, but not take it.

Then on to Panama Canal, which is personal favourite of mine, and again we had most of the flags for the majority of the time. I did numerous rambo revives which were very enjoyable and I even managed to kill some people too. My K/D (which I’m only mentioning for comparison between playing against more skilled players compared to the first couple of games) went down to 0.71 from 1.23 on the first night.

My main issue on the Xbox is the sticks do not have the same accuracy as the PS3 controller sticks and the fire button (Right Trigger) is currently awkward to use for pistols as you have to depress it all the way to fire unlike the straight microswitch on PS3. This means that I miss fire the pistol.

All in all the Xbox is fun but I need Donncha and DrunkinDunkin to get on at some point!

Back on XBoxLive..

Yes Donncha I did pay for XBL through gritted teeth. Paying for the privilege of allowing a device that I’ve fully paid for to utilise the online activities of a game that I’ve paid for, using an internet connection that I’ve already paid for. Gah!

The last time I played anything on XBL was probably CoD4 back in about 2007/8 before the machine got the RRoD and was duly sent off to Microsoft for repair. While it was away I purchased an PS3 (which was always my first choice, but Sony took soooo long to release it I opted for the Xbox) and never looked back. Paying for online gaming? Pfffft!

So PSN is up the tubes and my PC can’t handle BFBC2, what else am I supposed to do? It’s cheaper to get BFBC2 on Xbox and pay for Live than it would be to upgrade my machine to BFBC2 standards. There’s also two other factors in that I know a lot of people now who play Xbox, and my hands are no longer used to playing keyboard and mouse so it gets uncomfortable after about half an hour or so (when I used to be online PC gaming for hours…).

The PC works great for L4D2 and TF2 with TyeWebb, Donncha, DrunkinDunkin, Shaz and anyone else who cares to join. In fact Donncha and I went head to head last night on TF2 where he showed me what a no scope rocket aimbot is like (/wink).

But anyway, back to Xbox and BFBC2. I’ve been tweeting about going on Xbox mainly due to the length of time PSN has been down and last night I managed it. Although my PVR is not happy with the Xbox so I’ll need to play with some settings there.

Differences between Xbox and PS3? Not being able to throw a grenade when you spawn? Had trouble with that on Xbox but it’s not something that I ever noticed on the PS3 but had plenty of occasions last night where I needed to do it… and it wouldn’t, for a good 3-5 seconds after spawn.

Other than that, there’s the same level of non-objective playing point whoring, K/D obsessed, bush wookie jessies as there are on PS3 (and I imagine PC). In the two games I played of Conquest as a level 0 I came in the top three first game, and top the second for the simple reason that I was playing the objective.

So here’s the vid of the very first game, edited and sped up to prevent boredom. No commentary, just Team Medic Justice:

If you’re on Xbox then send me a FR: MrCheapKills

Filthmongers

I was on BFBC2 last night with drunkindunkin, Ryu, Shaz, and My_Dog_Bill (no, my dog is not called Bill….. ah, forget it). For the most part they were the squad I was rolling with. Oh, did I say rolling, I should have said ‘steam rollering’ because that’s pretty much what every game is at the moment. And here’s the reason why:

This is how it went down with every team we were up against: us attacking – Hooray we win. Us defending – hold them at the first base. Even more frustrating was the first game we played when joined on the last base of Port Valdez as attackers (75 tickets). We kept getting getting stopped as we ran up the left side and eventually I noticed on the minimap that not one, not two, not three, not four, but FIVE of our team mates where filthy wookiees sitting in our spawn sniping!

After another failed attempt at getting up the hill with no support I decided to go and let our wookiess know what a sterling job they were doing by parking a tank in their line of view and destroying every bit of cover they were using. Sorry random filthmongers, but sniping defenders only counts as supporting your team if you’re sniping the people mowing down your team mates – the same counts when defending, you have to snipe attackers BEFORE they plant the MCom, not after.

Luckily after a couple of games other people from my friends list joined in so we were at about 50% effectiveness. Although on defense I think we could have just played tracer dart tag and still won. At one point I messaged an enemy sniper, congratulating on sniping me, again, and encouraged him to actually leave his spawn and go for the objective. He didn’t reply.

Eventually it got frustrating not being able to go and get the enemy (out of bounds is ballcocks), especially on Harvest Day. That map is rubbish when the enemy team are filthmongers. After about 15 minutes on the first base they still had 32 tickets so we decided that Conquest had it coming. At least those who are shy about leaving their spawn can be encouraged to do so by some gentle spawn raping in conquest.

You can understand new players who don’t know what to do strapping on the wookiee kit and staying put, but these filthmongers were all level 45+ including a number of level 50s…. some of whom donated their dogtags to me in return for a ritual digital nut dip.

If you want to whore kills, play SDM. Sure, I’m not a fan of telling people how to play for the most part, but at least play the GAMETYPE, even if you do intend to be obnoxious.

Our guest this time is NGT director and Hupit bod Gary, AKA Hypermole and also mole237 on YouTube.

The main topics of the podcast are the C64 PC (?!), Homefront, Vanquish and Battlefield Play 4 Free.

On Donncha’s post regarding this episode he urges listeners NOT to listen past the end jingle……

Don’t forget that Don’t Revive Me Bro also have their podcast running, with the most recent featuring Daniel ‘Zh1nt0’ Matros, the community manager for BattleField games at DICE. You can find it all here

DrunkinDunkin’s blog here

====================================================

If 40 minutes of me, Donncha and Gary whittering away is enough for you then I also have a 20+ minute vid up. It’s a request effort, live commentary play by play of a game of Conquest on Panama Canal. There are some sweary bits, so NSFW.

====================================================

And lastly, I recently put up a video entitled ‘Let’s Talk About: Copyright’. It’s the first time that I’ve shown my face on camera and so I’m a little talking head in the corner over some gameplay. The main theme of the video is why it’s not worth trying to get around the issue of copyright on YouTube, why it’s right for content creators to be protected by copyright and the usage of Creative Commons material as an alternative.

The next Let’s Talk will be on the subject of subscribers.

That’s all for now.

MEDIC!?

Had some great games last night with TyeWebb, briefly Redd_dragons, Car_Jacker1, and DrunkinDunkin (there was also Bydo Empire and Matsa, but they were on another squad).

I was using my usual mix and match of hopelessly inappropriate kits, mainly because I’ve still not unlocked anything worthwhile on the MrCheapKills account yet. Got some C4 kills, most notably a really douchey kill against a mounted MG user on Valparaisio, then boobytrapping the MCom when they went to disarm “They’re disarming…” Me: “Not any more” *BOOM* and also firing a medic across the map while killing myself at the same time.

There was also a moment on Nelson Bay (Oops – White Pass) where DrunkinDunkin, Tywebb and I used up the worlds supply of C4 on one building (I think there’s a video in the offing by Gavin on that one). I also witnessed Gavin circle strafing like a boss on Oasis after he had a less than successful stint in a random helicopter.

All in all we trounced the other team, with them barely making it past the first base on most of the maps. On attack they mostly stayed in their spawn once they were below 30 tickets. And there was a massive amount of medics on the opposing team too. A poor show to be honest.

But great games none the less, despite my relatively early night.

Don’t forget – Community Cock-About Challenge, TONIGHT:

And here’s Gavin’s White Pass video (complete with many medics):

Be there or be….. somewhere else.

AT4 Community Cock-About Challenge

A while back batmanjokergorden proposed an idea of doing a sort of community ‘cheap kills’ event. At the time I’d just moved to the new YouTube channel and although the idea was sound in principle there weren’t enough subscribers who could record to make it work.

Fast forward a couple of months, couple of hundred subscribers later, add a twitter conversation and dontrevivemebro.com and we have the first Community Cock-About Challenge:

The official thread and leaderboard for the challenge is on dontrevivemebro.com

So here’s the lowdown:

SDM only (to minimise the effect that cocking about has on the rest of your team)
AT4 only (and specs you like)
Kills with other weapons/kits = disqualification
10pts per AT4 kill (including Destruction 2.0 caused by the AT4)
50pts for teabagging a wookie
50pts for each squadmate who also takes part in the Community Cock-About
100pts for a 360 no-scope off a building
1000pts if you win the round as top player

If you can’t record, you can still take part. Do it for the lulz, or take a screenie of your score at the end. Hilarity ensues.

So what are you waiting for?

Drunkindunkin’s C4 Montage

I knew I forgot something on the weeklyish update post.

This:

Gotta love the C4 work. It’s like art. I’m almost moved to tears by its beauty.

A Bit of a Catch Up

Right I’ve got a couple of things to post about, so let’s get going:

More Choice, More Variety: Non-English Language Commentary

I think it’s important that there’s variety of choice in most things (as long as there’s quality too – no one wants a choice of brainsurgeon ranging from world class, to comes bottom of his class when playing ‘Operation’…) and so when I’ve had people message me about setting up their channels I always give them the same advice:

Do it because you enjoy doing it
Do your own thing, be your own person

Being a UK/Europe guy another topic that pops up from time to time is “I’m from [insert country] and I’d like to do commentary but they have to be in English….” This seems to be a misconception. Sure, if you want to reach the widest audience then doing it in English is going to help out, but I think it’s something of a shame that more people don’t commentate in their native language. It’s definitely a good way of gaining confidence should that person then decide to move on to English language commentary.

I may be odd, but I quite enjoy watching/listening to non-English commentaries. Anyone else?
In the meantime (I tweeted this the other day) for Polish language commentary ThrashHMG has begun putting up commentaries (BFBC2 at the moment):

Powodzenia Thrash, Twój komentarz brzmi świetnie do tej pory (google translate, so apologies for any errors).

MrCheapKills PSN Account

When Vietnam came out I had trouble with the PSN store not accepting my card to the point where it locked my account of the transaction area all together. Sony (non)support were enthusiastic, but ultimately useless and so (with prompting from Donncha) I thought “I’ll just create a new account, download it and play on that!” By some fluke, MrCheapKills was available so I registered with that.

Vietnam downloaded and I was ready to go….. except for one fatal flaw: no VIP codes. Dagnabbit! Well yesterday my pal Nintendo Mike came round for some beer and gaming. He’s a much keener gamer than me and generally beats me on everything we play…. except CoD4. I put that in last, 1v1 and I was like a god! I know it’s not much fun getting beat so we then played some co-op World at War and zombies, then a bit of Spec-Ops on MW2. So what’s this got to do with MrCheapKills?

When Mike had left I thought I’d have a go on MW2 for probably on the second time since I got BFBC2. So MrCheapKills – total noob, level 0 and the first lobby I join….. and infection/hack/something lobby!? Double-You-Tee-Eff! I didn’t think they had them on the PS3. Anyway, as I’m curious about these things I stayed for a look around:

None of that video is speeded up, or edited, that’s how it was – as soon as the game started and I saw what it was I hit record.

It just seems completely pointless to me, and I’m glad I don’t play MW2 anymore, especially as the the next game I got in to was a pro-pipe extravaganza on Terminal. It’s a bit hypocritical for me to have a go at pro-pipers, but the game has been out sooooo long that surely people are bored with that sort of thing now?

Right, so on to what this has to do with MrCheapKills….. after the debacle that was MW2 I decided to play some Level Zero BFBC2 non-VIP. SDM I go and find that level Zero must be where all the CoD players live as the first “conversation” I had was this:

Australian Kid: Anyone got a mic?
Me: Yup
Australian Kid: Where are you from?
Me: UK
Australian Kid: Cool, I’m from Australia
Me: That’s good to hear
…..couple of minutes later
Australian Kid: Hey, UK guy?
Me: Yeah?
Australian Kid: Are you gay?
Me: Erm, no. Do you wish I was gay?
Australian Kid: NO! Why would you say that?!
Me: Well why would you ask if I was gay?
Australian Kid: I don’t know
Me: Well it was you who asked the question so you should know…
Australian Kid: Well it’s just that most UK people are gay.
Me: Of course, I’d forgotten about that.
*leave game*

So then Duck joined me and we created havoc among the hard of thinking. We even spent some time being bush wookiees on Laguna Presa as that is what all the cool kids do. I even got a cool long quick scope on a medic who must have been new as he shot his LMG everywhere around me, but not really at me. It was fun, but a bit like playing against bad AI for the most part. Even the high ranking players (level 46) tended to be not very good – and that’s something coming from me!

Video to follow

Okay so here’s what it’s all got to do with MrCheapKills. My main account in PSN is going to remain as evaDlivE as that is where all my DLC access. But for future games I’m thinking that I’m going to be using the MrCheapKills account to tie things in a bit better. Hmmm, took me long enough to say that.

Peas and loaves.
