DSP and Machinima and Hutch, oh my!

Everyone loves a bit of drama. Some of it is manufactured, some of it is because some people have zero social skills and some of it is caused because opinions and the perception of “facts” fail to mesh. Add some pride and you can get yourself a doozy! (btw, the first two ’causes’ of drama are not relevant here, they’re just included for reference).

DSP – also known as Dark Syde Phil or The King of Hate HD (never really got that one as there’s not much proper hate in his videos) posted an “Inbox” vid. It’s the standard Question and Answer format that people seem to enjoy – you know, you send them a question, they read it out and give you a response but the only thing that you pay attention to is that they’ve read your name out!

Now he answered a question about being on Machinima and/or being partnered with Machinima. For the most part, and from what I understand about Machinima contracts, he’s correct in what he says. Not so sure about the Machinima Partnership bit though. So that you can get an idea of what I’m on about, here’s the vid (skip to 8.50 – and it goes on for about 10 minutes as DSP can’t half talk…):

From what I understand, Machinima has put the partnership umbrella over certain channels which is different to being actual partners and judging by the “watch the ads or GTFO my channel” attitude of at least one of the “partners” it would seem that the channel owners do get a cut of the advertising revenue. In that case DSP would appear to be mistaken. As for the rest of his opinion on Machinima – well, I don’t think he’s far off the mark.

It would seem that currently Machinima is in a state of flux. MW2 is on its way out and there’s a glut of new games on the horizon. Plus many of the established “stars” are splintering off to do their own thing, or set up rival enterprises, some are leaving gaming and others are losing their appeal. Over the past couple of months Machinima has signed a massive amount of new directors of varying quality. My only thought on that is that they’re scooping up as much fresh blood as possible to ensure they have enough content when the new games are released, and the most successful of those will get priority of the fifty million other directors on there.

But anyhoo – I digress. Back to the drama. So Hutch saw the vid, or was told about the vid and blew a gasket (I imagine).

There was also a video response, but I missed that as Hutch removed it, I only caught the aftermath vid:

So pride caused an overzealous defence of Machinima from Hutch. That’s fair enough. But after watching the DSP video and reading Hutch’s tweets it seems that he’s basically confirming what DSP said! Other than the current partnership issue, DSPs reasons for NOT going with Machinima were what Hutch said happened. Machinima wouldn’t feature his vids in the way he wanted them to, plus he didn’t want to go through the hassle of adding the pre and post roll Machinima clips (and it is a hassle adding in other peoples content).

Drama drama drama. I wonder how many extra views and advertising impressions both channels have received from that….

*EDIT* Skip to 6.22 for rant (not sure if this is the vid that was meant to be removed or what):

The Fake Nuke was FAKE!? – shocker!

Not going to say too much on this except for two things:

1 – I wonder what all the people who were jumping to silly boy’s defence are saying/thinking now?…..

and

2 – In the video he claims that he never said his fake nukes were real/legit……but you only have to watch the fifty thousand dual commentaries he did to hear him gush about how legit, real and totally not set up they were. Even when directly confronted by TheEnd.

Yup, I’m sure he’s sorry. Sorry he got caught.

It’s Election Time….

…or popularity contest if you prefer. Where eager young things put their ‘X’ next to the candidate that they think mirrors their own values and will make the biggest change in their life, while the older more cynical voters know that whoever wins will actually change nothing….. That’s right peeps, it’s UK General Election time Machine Premier Director voting time.

Machinima have put a poll on Facebook for users to vote on who they think should be the next Premier Director to fill Hutch’s spot. A couple of the directors have put “Vote for me” vids up….but you know what, and this is the problem with popularity contests/democracy, people in general are fairly blinkered, selfish and short sighted (and have really poor collective memories).

Tjeb is in the lead at this point, romping home by the look of it. And why shouldn’t he? He’s young and fun and talks about boobs and touching yourself – which exactly describes the general YouTube Community. The demographic for the YouTube MW2/gaming community is Tjeb so of course they’re going to vote for him!

Forget about the guy in the hat who’s been there from the beginning, or that dude who runs around with the knife while making some very acute observations on life, even the guy with the really offensive custom classes is trailing waaaaaay behind the crazy young Swede.

But get this – I like Tjeb, I’ve been subscribed to him for a while in internet terms, but personally, I don’t think he deserves it. *GASP* (I can feel the hate cannons swivel in my direction…) It’s true, I don’t. I think he’s a good player, and his commentaries are fun and entertaining, but lately he’s put up hardly any videos and the majority of his recent efforts have been *yawn* quickscoping. Obviously he has a life, but so does every other person the list.

Some of the other names on the list have been much more active and consistent in posting vids for their subscribers, but that’s democracy for you. The candidate that most closely matches the demographic is the person who wins – that’s how it is and that’s how it’s always been.

So congratulations to Tjeb on your Premier Director status. What do you mean the polls haven’t closed yet? It’s a one horse race!

I’ve been David, and you’ve been awesome!

Cheating Hits the Frag Cup…..

And it’s only round one!

I don’t really follow the Frag Cup but this is a fairly major turn of events.

Team OpTiC have been disqualified after it was shown that their player DTreats had hacked attributes. After my posts here and here and disappointment with CODNation.net all on the subject of cheating and boosting it is nice to see that there is still hope out there, and that not “everyone wants to cheat”.

Here’s the Machinima Respawn where Sark and Hutch reference DTreats cheating – although I think they were a little harsh accusing him of using an aimbot….

Here’s the game footage:

He has a hacked gamefile, that is for sure, and as high profile as this is I’d imagine XBL/Microsoft will be wielding the ban hammer in his direction some time soon.

Unfortunately there are still a lot of people out there who are attempting to excuse DTreats with various arguments based along the the line of “he shouldn’t be DQ’d because having a fourth kill streak didn’t help him in a non-killstreak game….”. Well, that’s really not the point – he broke the rules of the tourney therefor his team gets disqualified – and not getting the benefit in a tourney doesn’t mean that he isn’t cheating in public games WHICH IS EVEN WORSE!

But worse still is the fact that OpTiC would allow people into their fold who employ cheats and mods. As far as I was aware OpTiC were/are pretty major and like to show how 1337 they are, yet at least one of them flushes his integrity down the toilet with hacked lobby shennanigans. It makes you think – are they the best because of their 1337 skillz, or are they top because they cheat? In this years Frag Cup we’ll never know.

Stupidity at its finest.

Stimulus Pack, Mario Kart and BFBC2

Just quick post this evening, nothing fancy.

Stimulus Pack
New video from Hutch interviewing FourZeroTwo about the Stimulus Pack.
Points discussed:

  • When will it be released for PC and PS3
  • Crash and Overgrown
  • Any other CoD4 maps being released
  • DLC Rumours
  • Pricing decisions

And here’s the vid:

Mario Kart Wii

My friend and Nintendo fanboy Mike well and truly made me his bitch on Mario Kart Wii the other night. Apparently you can play up to eight players on the multiplayer, but as he’s the only person I know with a Wii it was just the two of us. I think I was at a slight disadvantage as Mike has unlocked everything and has achieved gold on every track including the mirror cups – while I have about ten hours of play time…. I won one race out of four Grand Prix which is 1/16. However, despite Mike’s flawless sprints around the tracks he told me that he can’t win against other people via the Mario Kart Wii channel – which is rather revealing.

I think that this will be one game that I play with the kids and that’s it. It makes me swear enough when I play against the AI, I think I’d probably have an aneurysm if I played it online.

Stupid Nintendo and their stupid games.

Battle Field Bad Company 2

I’ve decided I’m going to get BFBC2 on the PS3 next week. I’ve got some games on ebay, and if they don’t sell, then they’ll be traded in against it. I wasn’t too fussed about the game before it came out as Modern Warfare 2 is where all the cool kids were at, plus it’s an EA title and I’m not a huge fan of theirs. But after seeing the different videos that are coming out from the likes of Geoff and StoneFaceLock amongst others and reading about the fun that people such as Donncha have been having with it I think it’s time to swallow my pride and jump on that combat band wagon.

Errr…. that’s it. Thanks for reading.

Is Quickscoping a Random Event?

So this post is about quick scoping and no scoping. I was inspired to write it after watching the following video and then reading/participating in the comments. The video isn’t really that interesting unless you enjoy listening to someone complain constantly about how crap MW2 is, but here it is for context:

Recently I’ve put my lack up success in Modern Warfare 2 and pretty much every other FPS down to my awful aiming. It’s as good an excuse as any and is something that only I can have an effect on. So I’ve been looking at how the more successful players aim in game and in most cases they make it so that the enemy is within the onscreen crosshairs before ADS (aiming down sight). This means that they already have a bead on the enemy and they are not chasing them across the screen with their sights. But what has that got to do with quickscoping and no scoping?

Bear with me because in order to fully explain this it may take some time. On screen (unless you’re playing hardcore) you have the cross hairs – four little white blocks towards the centre of the screen:

Crosshairs

The Crosshairs can be seen in the centre of the screen around the number 1

When the Call of Duty series started, one thing that they did well was to increase the realism of firing your gun. So no longer did your bullets go in a straight line from the barrel of the gun to the horizon.

No more Laser Guns

No more Laser Guns

Instead, when you fire without ADS (aiming down sight) your bullet will follow a trajectory from a random point within the crosshair area to replicate muzzle sway:

The Hit Area

The Hit Area

If your taget is across the map then your chances of getting a non-ADS kill (or even a hit) are greatly reduced. But in the event that your enemy fills the “hit” area then you will hit them – not accurately, but a hit nonetheless. And as Bruce Lee said “A hit is a hit!”. If you are lucky your hip fire will strike them in a critical area scoring a multiplier before they are able to return the favour. The ONLY way to accurately hit your target is to ADS, or scope in if you are using a scoped weapon:

ADS in action

ADS - the best way to fly

The crosshair accuracy increases if you crouch or go prone – in most cases it will noticeably contract. Accuracy is reduced when you are moving which you can see on screen as the distance between the crosshair points expands.

So now we’ve got that out of the way, let’s get on to no-scoping, and quick-scoping (NS and QS from here on). I don’t have a problem with people who no-scope or quick-scope, but I do think that on the whole those who say it is all about skillz and being 1337 are teeny tiny bit delusional. People who NS and QS in MW2 utilise two things in their “skill” whether they realise it or not – luck, and the helping hand of auto aim. When your crosshairs are filled by your target, or they occupy a large proportion of it then your chances of hitting that target are increased. When you scope in, the auto aim “snaps” you towards the target if one is close to the center of the crosshair. Combine with that the fact that the sniper rifles do a lot of damage and you increase your chances of getting a kill even further.

To illustrate the random spread of fire when no scoping have a look at this quick clip from Hutch:

As you can see, the guy he’s trying to shoot is in the middle of the crosshairs, but due to the random spray element the bullets are missing him….. Which neatly brings us on to the whole Sniper Rifle hitmarker complaining that people – mostly quick and no scopers – are complaining about. I’ll allow YouTube comments from the first video to explain how I feel about hitmarkers with the Sniper Rifle (I posted before about getting hitmarkers when using the silencer).

I missed off the ‘t’ in ‘event’ in the last reply…. Anyway – that’s pretty much how I feel about quickscoping. If it was total skill then the quick scoper would not get hitmarkers and their shots would be upper body/head. But that is not the case because they are effectively in between hip firing and ADS. If you watch any QS videos you’ll see that in most cases the scope doesn’t even come up far enough to see the enemy in it….is that aiming?

One thing you’ll notice is that QS and NS posters on YouTube will generally post montage clips of their 1337 skillz. Invariably they show every hit getting “One Shot Kill” or “Headshot” – but these are montage clips, meaning they are the best bits. If you watch videos from QSs who post full matches they you will see them miss, sometimes a lot.

But generally they put it down to lag, or Infinity Ward messing up – but it’s not. Try aiming, that’ll fix the problem in a heartbeat. I particularly like the commentaries that go: “So….um…..yeah. I’m sniping and….. oh my god look at this! A hitmarker?!…..and then he kills me. Infinity Ward, you need to fix this, like, immediately as this is the single thing that makes me want to quit playing this game right now, along with noobtube noobs, commando noobs, Assualt Rifle noobs, SMG noobs, pistol noobs, shotgun noobs, rocket noobs, thermal noobs, grenade noobs, semtex noobs, claymore noobs, C4 noobs, hardscope noobs, turret noobs, prone noobs, jumping noobs, camping noobs, running noobs, chopper gunner noobs, AC130 noobs, last stand noobs, martyrdom noobs and nooby noobs. So……um…..yeah”

In my opinion and experience, is Quickscoping governed by random chance? Yes, yes it is. I’m fully prepared to be proven otherwise, but so far I have not found one person who can consistently get upper body or head shots while no or quick scoping. Even so called Quick Scope tutorials are vague at best on how to do it. My own no scope and quick scope tests indicate the bullet spread remains random compared to actually aiming.

Okay, here are some new additions to my Modern Warfare 2 YouTube commentator list. The people listed are commentating MW2 gameplay in an interesting or amusing way and hopefully giving an insight in to better gameplay. So if you want to improve at MW2 why not check out some of these guys – and don’t forget to rate and/or subscribe to them!

YouTube MW2 Peeps updated

I’ve added a couple of people to my YouTube Modern Warfare2 subscriptions, so I thought I’d post an updated list. Again, this is not an order of preference, just the way they show on my YouTube account – the previous entries are at the bottom. I’m trying to only subscribe to positive people. There’s enough negativity around as it is. Obviously there are things in the game that not everyone agrees with, but you don’t want to see a 10 minute video of someone complaining about something and demanding that Infinity Ward “fix it immediately”….. The issues that some of these commentators mention are balanced in an Ivana Trump “it is what it is” way. Same as before, if I’ve missed someone you think should be included, let me know.

My First and Last MW2 YouTube Video

I’ve been messing with the idea of recording some of my Modern Warfare 2 gameplay because I’m so awesome at the game I thought it would make a change for people to see an ordinary average player rather than the usual beasted ownage that you see from players like Hutch, SeaNanners, czeko92, theMOODIEswede, tjeb and all the other brilliant players out there.

Anyway, I’d looked at different ways of doing it and as I already had a Dazzle adapter thingy for a video camera I cobbled together a splitter cable. Which was fine except it meant playing in non-HD, and the computer didn’t like the set up. So I went cross-eyed and the PC had a fit.

The next thing was using the video camera to record directly from the screen – a cam, as it were. Again this was fine except for a couple of things:

  • flicker from the screen, it’s a 50hz plasma screen and the slowest shutter speed on the camera is 1/50th so that was unavoidable.
  • Because I was using headphones to play and couldn’t be bothered to make an audio splitter cable there was no actual in game sound
  • Connected directly to the PC I could only get 5 minutes footage before the camera shuts down
  • Couldn’t get the whole screen in without getting a massive border

I made a quick intro bit and stuck some music on it. I avoided the usual Drowning Pool or LaRoux that seems to be popular at the moment and went for something more fitting to my gameplay. It was the first (and only game) I played last night and when I joined the team were already losing. It was on Afghan and I chose my sniper class as I prefer to go sniping on this map. My secondary was the PP2000 which I’ve only just started using and by golly it’s a beast of a gun.

One mistake I made was forgetting that I had claymores equipped which meant that the twice a grenade would have been infinitely more useful I stood in the open and brazenly planted a claymore (although later on it did alert me to the position of the enemy).

And here it is (although not available in Germany due to WMG restrictions):
*UPDATE 08-05-2010- Now not available anywhere due to a copyright strike on my channel)*

I’m not going to make anymore videos for the forseeable future, not because it was difficult, but because I’m not happy with the end quality from the camera set up. But if anyone has an HD PVR that they don’t want I’ll take it off their hands for zero monies (you don’t ask you don’t get).

YouTube MW2 Video Peeps

If you’re new to Modern Warefare 2 and are looking for gameplay tips, or amusing commentary over great MW2 gameplay then you can’t really get any better than YouTube for it. I’ve got a number of subscriptions to the more popular peeps on there which I’m going to list. If you know of some other good players/commentators who are uploading then please leave a comment to their link. They don’t have to be beast players, or particular player types, I like to see people having fun with the game and having a positivity in their commentating (I don’t like people who constantly complain about other players).

Anyway – the list:

They’re not in any order of preference – that’s how they’re listed in my YouTube account.

**EDIT**

Addition to the list as suggested by Donncha. This isn’t quite the usual commentary but rather a guy who started posting videos of how awful he was at MW2. I’m fairly confident that he’s not as bad as he makes out anymore, but he’s having fun with the game and does some sketches and bits and pieces with a couple of personas he’s adopted.
