DSP and Machinima and Hutch, oh my!

Everyone loves a bit of drama. Some of it is manufactured, some of it is because some people have zero social skills and some of it is caused because opinions and the perception of “facts” fail to mesh. Add some pride and you can get yourself a doozy! (btw, the first two ’causes’ of drama are not relevant here, they’re just included for reference).

DSP – also known as Dark Syde Phil or The King of Hate HD (never really got that one as there’s not much proper hate in his videos) posted an “Inbox” vid. It’s the standard Question and Answer format that people seem to enjoy – you know, you send them a question, they read it out and give you a response but the only thing that you pay attention to is that they’ve read your name out!

Now he answered a question about being on Machinima and/or being partnered with Machinima. For the most part, and from what I understand about Machinima contracts, he’s correct in what he says. Not so sure about the Machinima Partnership bit though. So that you can get an idea of what I’m on about, here’s the vid (skip to 8.50 – and it goes on for about 10 minutes as DSP can’t half talk…):

From what I understand, Machinima has put the partnership umbrella over certain channels which is different to being actual partners and judging by the “watch the ads or GTFO my channel” attitude of at least one of the “partners” it would seem that the channel owners do get a cut of the advertising revenue. In that case DSP would appear to be mistaken. As for the rest of his opinion on Machinima – well, I don’t think he’s far off the mark.

It would seem that currently Machinima is in a state of flux. MW2 is on its way out and there’s a glut of new games on the horizon. Plus many of the established “stars” are splintering off to do their own thing, or set up rival enterprises, some are leaving gaming and others are losing their appeal. Over the past couple of months Machinima has signed a massive amount of new directors of varying quality. My only thought on that is that they’re scooping up as much fresh blood as possible to ensure they have enough content when the new games are released, and the most successful of those will get priority of the fifty million other directors on there.

But anyhoo – I digress. Back to the drama. So Hutch saw the vid, or was told about the vid and blew a gasket (I imagine).

There was also a video response, but I missed that as Hutch removed it, I only caught the aftermath vid:

So pride caused an overzealous defence of Machinima from Hutch. That’s fair enough. But after watching the DSP video and reading Hutch’s tweets it seems that he’s basically confirming what DSP said! Other than the current partnership issue, DSPs reasons for NOT going with Machinima were what Hutch said happened. Machinima wouldn’t feature his vids in the way he wanted them to, plus he didn’t want to go through the hassle of adding the pre and post roll Machinima clips (and it is a hassle adding in other peoples content).

Drama drama drama. I wonder how many extra views and advertising impressions both channels have received from that….

*EDIT* Skip to 6.22 for rant (not sure if this is the vid that was meant to be removed or what):

Machinima Premier Director…

Check out BackslashGaming.com for gaming news, views and reviews.

The hunt is on, again, for a new Machinima Premier Director now that SeaNanners (Adam) is a bona fide, honest to goodness, straight up employee of Machinima. Much in the same way that a Premier Directorship came up when Hutch was lured into full time employment at the House of Fun.

The Premier Director is selected from the list of existing Machinima Directors so it could be ANYONE!….

No it can’t be. And no it won’t be. Sorry to shatter anyone’s illusions here. Last time around I correctly predicted who would be chosen based on the workings of democracy. It’s a very simple equation to work from – the person with the most votes wins. That time around it was Tejb. Tejb had at least 50,000 more subscribers than anyone else in the running which meant that even if only half of his subscribers were active and weren’t porn bots, multiple accounts, or inactive then he’d win. And win he did – surprise surprise <_<

Anyone with a YouTube account and more than a hundred subs can work out for themselves that for the most part only 10% of the subscribers are 'hardcore' (meaning they watch, rate and mostly comment on EVERY video put out), about another 25% or so will view and thumb, and the rest will sporadically watch and/or participate. That's not counting the 10% of subscribers whose tally of subscriptions is in excess of 150 YouTube channels which means to me that they could care less what you do and are even less likely to watch any content you put out anyway.

By my reckoning most 'YouTubers' have between 20% and 35% of their total subscribers who actively participate in the channel. I could be full of da poop, but these figures are based off interaction on my channel and from looking at the number of thumbs and comments on other peoples channels so I've not just pulled the information out of my ass. However, if you have more reliable numbers then please let me know, because I love stuff like that.

Anyhoo, back to the point. SeaNanners announced the drive for a new Premier Director in his most recent video:

Now, here's where I got interested. Adam says it's not going to be "a popularity contest". But it is. It can't be anything but a popularity contest. The last "election" was a popularity contest, and any time you invoke the power of democracy it will ALWAYS be a popularity contest.

Here's how Adam has attempted to throw a spanner in the democratic works. There will be three current Machinima Directors chosen to duke it out for the mantle of Premiership. Two of them will be decided by being….. *ahem* most popular in terms of likes and comments. And the third will be a Wildcard chosen by the BananaMan himself.

That's a great idea, but it's not going to change the fact that if the outcome is being decided by the community liking, voting and commenting on the three finalists then the finalist WITH THE MOST ACTIVE SUBSCRIBERS will be the winner. It doesn't matter if SeaNanners plucks Jesus Christ himself (not Obviously Jesus) from the list of Machinima Directors, if his active subscriber count is not in excess of #1 or #2's active subscriber count then he hasn't got a hope in hell (and unless SeaNanners chooses THE most popular person on Machinima at the moment then he might as well not waste his time).

Sure the extra publicity will net the Wildcard some new subscribers, but that's it. Democracy is a popularity contest, asking the community to vote is a popularity contest, and putting a wildcard in there will NOT change the outcome. Unless they decide to use another voting system such as proportional representation….. but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

By the way, does anyone know who the most popular people on Machinima are right now? I unsubbed from Machinima a while back so have no idea who's who and what's what on there any more.

That is all.

How Many Thoughts on Machinima?

One? Two? Three? Four? Five? Six? Seven? …..

Congrats, Ben on being Machinima’d. When you’re in LA getting a massage from Hutch and a pedicure from Sark, while Nannerman cooks you up something tasty based on chicken, don’t forget about us little people.

I am now officially a pundit

It’s true. I know it makes me sound big headed and egotistical – but, you know, it’s like totally the truth.

Now that I’ve finished blowing smoke up my own ass I’ll fill you in on what I’m on about….

Tejb is the new Machinima Premier Director. What have I been saying for the past 600 Internet years about who is going to be the next Premier Director? Tejb. That’s right. My prediction was banana crazy awesomely on the money.

Now to head down to William Hill to bet on the General Election and put the lottery on.

Paging Alan Wake….

*This is also posted at GamesInANutshell*

Anyone who has been watching Machinima videos for the past…… I don’t know how long, it’s probably like seventy years in Internet terms, will have noticed references to Alan Wake.

If you’re missing your quota of gumption you’ll be posting “Hey! WTF is up with the popups!? You suck Machinima! YOU SUUUUCK!!!11!!11!eleventy1!” or words to that effect in the comments section of every video they put up. If you have a small amount of gumption you’ll have turned annotations off.

Everyone else will know that Alan Wake is a game that is coming to the Xbox360, there are also mini episodes or tasters (mmmmm….morsels) – live action films to give you the creeps make you interested in the title.

The short films are a bit odd – anyone old enough to have watched Twin Peaks will be familiar with the level of wierdness. For everyone else, it’s weird! What!? You haven’t seen the films? Boot up your 360 (and by that, I mean turn it on, not kick it across the room) head to the market place and look for the download.

Can’t be bothered? What’s that you say?… “Just show me the damned game!” …thought so. Okay champ! Here goes – the guys at liketotallyawesome have had a sneaky peaky and reviewed. It looks like it’s going to be a pretty engaging game and blurs the line between cinema, gaming and entertainment even more.

Democracy in Action

I love the excitement of a good election race. The debates, the manifestos, the whistle stop tours of places to get votes – the obviousness of who the winner will be long before the votes are counted.

Democracy, it’s a wonderful thing. And yet again, I’m still not talking about the UK General Election. The concepts still apply though.

In my last ‘It’s Election Time….‘ post I described how the majority demographic that bothers to vote reflects the values/persona of the person/party that will win the election. After all, democracy is nothing more than a big popularity contest with the end result being a continuation of the status quo regardless of who you vote for.

Previously, and despite voting for OnlyUseMeBlade, I said that it was a one horse race. That the winner would be Tejb as he most closely matches the majority demographic of the YouTube/Machinima Respawn community. So far I am spot on the money:

Will there be an upset? The xcalizorz peeps seem to be getting a bit more vocal…..

Haddock anyone?

Check this video out:

Watched it? Well even if you haven’t I’d like to make some general points about it….

  • It’s FFA at Gun1t International Airport
  • Non-Prestige lobby
  • “But, yeah” “yeah” “yeah” “but yeah” Wizard sounds really familiar….can’t quite work out who he reminds me of
  • The “director’s channel” is a co-lab channel
  • No one actually trying to kill Gun1t Wizard – even when they are running straight at him

It would be quite embarrassing for Machinima to be faked out twice.

I smell fish. What do you guys think?

The [KEN] is dead, long live the [KEN]

I’d been wondering why over the last couple of days there had been so many search results ending here regarding the “WING” tag. For those who may not know, Machinima Director Ken Burton created a Keep Everything Nice [KEN] campaign in an attempt to cut down, or limit the amount of douchery in gaming. In response, Wings of Redemption allegedly (“allegedly” because I never saw the original video) encouraged his followers to use the [WING] tag which stands for We Inspire Nasty Gamers (or Gaming). I have posted about this before, so if you use the search you’ll find many posts on the subject.

I don’t watch Wingsofredemeption videos and although I support Ken in his campaign I don’t really follow his channel that closely so I wasn’t sure why there was so much interest in WING.

But I did watch Ken’s most recent ‘DailyRant‘ video and it explains the sudden resurgence in WING popularity. Ken has been having a couple of issues lately with his “crew”. And as it turns out he chucked one of them out for using the WING tag (so that explains the interest on the search). More importantly, the KEN crew have been disbanded. In the video Ken states that he sort of realised that it wasn’t really going to work out about a month in to the campaign.

But it’s not the end of the campaign – the [KEN] tag continues as before. Just the gatekeepers are gone.

The Fake Nuke was FAKE!? – shocker!

Not going to say too much on this except for two things:

1 – I wonder what all the people who were jumping to silly boy’s defence are saying/thinking now?…..

and

2 – In the video he claims that he never said his fake nukes were real/legit……but you only have to watch the fifty thousand dual commentaries he did to hear him gush about how legit, real and totally not set up they were. Even when directly confronted by TheEnd.

Yup, I’m sure he’s sorry. Sorry he got caught.

Geoff Does Machinima, Copyright, and uber-PWNAGE

Geoff Does Machinima

Congrats to Geoff (sasbenjr) on his first Machinima video which went up today. It’s Rush game mode on Laguna Presa (BFBC2) and has a special guest appearance from Hugo, Javier and Barry – the red men. I think Geoff has raised the bar again in this commentary, and Machinima has already had an impact – almost 6000 subs.

Copyright

I’ve posted a couple of times recently about copyright and YouTube and the pitfalls that are waiting for the unwary. Well BlameTruth posted a video about a chum of his called DarkSydePhil whose channel had been deleted for copyright infringement. DarkSydePhil does gameplays and it would seem that the publishers of the games he was playing felt he was infringing their rights. My personal view on this is that the people who actually make the games probably think it’s awesome that people play their games, but the legal teams for the publishers are arseholes. Interestingly BlameTruth in his video mentions that he has two copyright strikes against him on YouTube notably for GTAIV gameplay. I say notably because I would have thought that RockStar (but not necessarily Take-Two) would not have an issue with gameplays…..but I digress.

I disagree with BlameTruth’s stance on the whole “wrongly suspended” message. YouTube is very clear on how it deals with copyright issues. It’s unfortunate that people trying to share their enjoyment of something get stomped on in this way – but it’s the reality of the situation. In fact I remember shortly after Gears of War came out some guy made a really cool anime-esque model/sculpture of the main character Marcus Fenix for his little brother. It was a really beautiful piece and he posted pics of it on the internet. Then the GoW lawyers wrote to him and told him that if he didn’t destroy it, the plans for it, and any other copies he’d made they’d sue him so bad his great-great-great-grandchildren would be paupers (or something like that). Thankfully in that scenario there was outcry in the gaming community and with a PR disaster looming the GoW legal guys backed down saying they didn’t realise it was a one off and apologised for being heavy handed. On YouTube you get some grumbling and the suspended guy opens a new channel.

So what’s the point of this post…..erm I’m not really sure. Probably how the concept and caveat of “fair use” in all current copyright law is ignored by the big companies while they ride rough shod over the people who support them.

While you consider that, here’s BlameTruth’s vid:

and lastly – uber-PWNAGE!!!!11!!1eleventy!1!

I’ve had some stinkers in my time. I’ve had some awful results and I’ve had my fair share of bad beatdowns…..but nothing as bad as this:

Sandy Ravage – you filthy filthy beast!

I’ve been David, and you’ve been awesome!
