It’s Election Time….

…or popularity contest if you prefer. Where eager young things put their ‘X’ next to the candidate that they think mirrors their own values and will make the biggest change in their life, while the older more cynical voters know that whoever wins will actually change nothing….. That’s right peeps, it’s UK General Election time Machine Premier Director voting time.

Machinima have put a poll on Facebook for users to vote on who they think should be the next Premier Director to fill Hutch’s spot. A couple of the directors have put “Vote for me” vids up….but you know what, and this is the problem with popularity contests/democracy, people in general are fairly blinkered, selfish and short sighted (and have really poor collective memories).

Tjeb is in the lead at this point, romping home by the look of it. And why shouldn’t he? He’s young and fun and talks about boobs and touching yourself – which exactly describes the general YouTube Community. The demographic for the YouTube MW2/gaming community is Tjeb so of course they’re going to vote for him!

Forget about the guy in the hat who’s been there from the beginning, or that dude who runs around with the knife while making some very acute observations on life, even the guy with the really offensive custom classes is trailing waaaaaay behind the crazy young Swede.

But get this – I like Tjeb, I’ve been subscribed to him for a while in internet terms, but personally, I don’t think he deserves it. *GASP* (I can feel the hate cannons swivel in my direction…) It’s true, I don’t. I think he’s a good player, and his commentaries are fun and entertaining, but lately he’s put up hardly any videos and the majority of his recent efforts have been *yawn* quickscoping. Obviously he has a life, but so does every other person the list.

Some of the other names on the list have been much more active and consistent in posting vids for their subscribers, but that’s democracy for you. The candidate that most closely matches the demographic is the person who wins – that’s how it is and that’s how it’s always been.

So congratulations to Tjeb on your Premier Director status. What do you mean the polls haven’t closed yet? It’s a one horse race!

I’ve been David, and you’ve been awesome!

Modern Warfare 2 – Three to Watch Week 4 (MW2)

It’s Wednesday, or Three To Watch Day as I prefer to call it. On my YouTube channel you’ll find this weeks Three To Watch clip video where three commentators from my subscription list are featured. This week is different to the first three episodes as I’ve included someone who is on Machinima – but I really enjoyed his commentary.

This week we have:

As usual, visit their channels, and show them some love.

Battle Field Bad Company 2 or Modern Warfare 2 Commentaries

There’s no denying that Battle Field Bad Company 2 looks good and sounds awesome. A lot of MW2 commentators have taken a hiatus from Call of Duty and are tearing it up on Bad Company 2. I don’t have the game and I didn’t get around to playing the demo (“for shame!” I hear you cry) so I enjoy watching the vids and first thoughts that people are expressing.

One problem that most commentators are running into is the length of a game. Most MW2 game modes are conveniently 10 minutes long which is just the right length to be accepted on YouTube. But apparently BFBC2 games are in excess of 20 minutes each which means that unless you are posting to Machinima or one of the other YouTube partners you need to do some ruthless editing.

However, there is another issue with BFBC2 videos…..they can be quite boring. I have no doubt that the game itself is amazing to play – from what I can see it does seem to be a more immersive experience for the player than MW2, but it doesn’t appear to translate well to game commentaries. There’s a lot of shooting at stuff that you can’t see and vehicle mayhem. The majority of YouTubers I subscribe to are there because I enjoy what they talk about so the gameplay is not always the most important aspect of the viewing but at the moment there seems to be a major “What to do with Bad Company 2” feeling in the videos.

I think the major issues for commentators are the size of the maps and the fact that it is mostly squad based with a more team orientated play style. So now instead of gameplay focusing on the individual achieving greatness it’s more “So here I am in this building for the forseeable future with my squad while we shoot at people in that other building waaaaaaaaaaaaay over there….”. BFBC2 is obviously a really good game, but I’m not sure that it is going to be successful for the commentators. Plenty of scope for tasty montages though.

And because I like to involve you as much as possible in what I’m saying I’ve finally worked out how to use the poll thingy. So if you are not registered at WordPress you can at least vote on which commentaries you prefer:

The [KEN] Campaign update (quickie)

Okay, quick post. First off, Ying and Yang – and people are picking sides, however it seems that more people are flocking to the nice side rather than rolling up to doucheville. However, it would seem that Wings of Redemption is plumbing new depths of douchebaggery by calling Ken Burton and Junkyard129 out……and then making those videos private when he realises the hornets nest he’s stirred up (or is that the amount of people unsubbing from him are posing a threat to his coveted Machinima contract?). He’s even gone as far as to incite people to use the acronym WING as their gamertag.

In case you weren’t aware, the [KEN] tag stands for:
Keep
Everything
Nice

but classy as ever, [WING] stands for:
We
Inspire
Nasty
Gaming (or Gamers)

Unfortunately, since Wings of Redemption has put his douchery to private I can’t link to his vitriol. I also admit that I haven’t actually seen what was said, but I did ask around as there were numerous comments referring to it and one user informed me:

yeah so in the video he basically calls out Ken and his campaign, and he calls out Junkyard129. Also, in retaliation to KEN, he started WING, which stands for We Inspire Nasty Gamers.

The thing I don’t get is that if you want to be a douche and trash talk then why don’t all the douches get together and douche each other out? I think the Xbox360 gaming zone and game matching system has a lot to answer for in this. When I was using my 360 online the zone ‘Underground’ specifically said it was for people who like to trash talk. Now that seems to be carte blanche to be a douche – you can say “but I’m in the Underground Zone man, that’s what it’s for!”. Except that the player matching system does not work (or at least didn’t when I was using it) which meant that despite being a ‘Casual Zone’ player I was always lumped in with the Underground muppets. But I digress. I game to have fun, not to abuse other people, be abused or see/hear other people being abused.

Here’s Junkyard129’s video response to Ken’s campaign – and I still don’t understand why people would find it fun to abuse others.
